PBD Biotech is developing a phage-based diagnostic, Actiphage TB, for the laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis. It is faster than the current gold-standard culture method that takes up to eight weeks to grow Mtb from a sputum sample.
The test provides a diagnosis from a blood sample. It uses a phage – the natural enemy of bacteria – to hunt down live bacterium in the blood sample and lyse them. This allows the DNA to be identified with qPCR.
Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT) are important to the continued development of personalized medicine. It is important that in vitro diagnostics are accurate [via fda.gov] so that patients and healthcare providers do not seek unnecessary treatments, delay needed treatments, or become exposed to inappropriate therapies.*
PBD Biotech provides components to enable your lab to set up and provide assays using Actiphage.
